According to a study, acupuncture relieves nausea, vomiting and pain after breast surgery.
Around 70 per cent of women who have breast surgery experience nausea and vomiting after the operation. In the first trial of its kind, a team at Duke University Medical Center gave either acupuncture, an anti-nausea medication, or no treatment to a group of 75 women having major breast surgery.

Around 77 per cent of those in the acupuncture group experienced no nausea or vomiting, compared to 64 per cent in the medication group and 42 per cent in the group having no treatment. Those having acupuncture also experienced pain relief. The researchers will now carry out further acupuncture studies and look at whether the therapy can be combined with medication to achieve even higher levels of relief from post-operative nausea and vomiting.
